@article{fdi:010053295, title = {{L}arval life history traits and larval growth of {G}nathodentex aurolineatus ({L}ethrinidae) before and after settlement in a sandy bay of {R}eunion {I}sland ({SW} {I}ndian {O}cean)}, author = {{P}othin, {K}. and {T}essier, {E}. and {C}habanet, {P}ascale and {L}ecomte {F}iniger, {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{L}arval life history traits and larval growth of {G}nathodentex aurolineatus ({L}ethrinidae) before and after settlment in a sandy bay of {R}eunion {I}sland ({SW} {I}ndian {O}cean). {T}he larval history of {G}nathodentex aurolineatus ({L}ethrinidae), a widespread species of the coral reefs in {R}eunion {I}sland ({SW} {I}ndian {O}cean), was revealed by otolith analysis. {P}airs of otoliths from 108 fishes were collected during a peak settlement in {S}aint-{P}aul {B}ay. {S}tandard length ({SL}) ranged from 62.5 to 70.7 mm and total length from 73.7 to 85.5 mm. {M}orphometric analysis of both all fishes and their otoliths, suggested that the.-samples came from a single cohort. {T}ransverse sections of sagitta (embedded in thermoplastic glue ({C}rystal {B}ond) and polished) were analysed. {D}aily periodicity of increments formation in otoliths was validated by alizarin red labelling. {D}aily increments were observed under a light microscope and counted to estimate age, age at settlement, larval life duration and laying, hatching and settlement dates. {A} settlement mark was visible on otolith sections. {F}ish age ranged between 55.2 and 59.4 days. {T}he pelagic larval stage was estimated to 40.0 +/- 2.5 days. {L}aying dates were estimated to occur in {D}ecember 2002, between the 23(rd) and the 27(th), a few days before the new moon period. {H}atching dates were estimated to occur between {D}ecember 24 and 28, and the first feeding dates between {D}ecember 26 and 30. {C}olonization took place in {J}anuary 2003, between the 15(th) and the 19(th) , during the full moon period. {T}he back-calculated laying size was comprised between 0.83 and 2.41 mm {SL}. {T}he back-calculated settlement size found in this study in the bay (between 44.60 and 50.44 min {SL}) was lower than the settlement size found in the lagoon zone (80 min). {W}idth increments on otolith sections were measured to establish otolith growth. {O}tolith growth (mean: 1.1 +/- 0.1 mm.d(-1)) was divided in two parts, showing significantly different growth rates. {A} first phase of rapid growth 1.4 +/- 0.1 mm.d(-1) during the pelagic stage, followed by a slowed down growth 0.7 +/- 0.2 mm.d(-1) after settlement. {T}he analysis of larval life events in relation to the current context in {I}ndian {O}cean {S}uggests that recruits (i) come from {R}eunion {I}sland or {M}auritius {I}sland and (ii) colonize the sandy and protected bay of {S}aint-{P}aul as an intermediate zone, before their resettlement on coral reef.}, keywords = {{L}ethrinidae ; {G}nathodentex aurolineatus ; {ISW} ; {R}eunion {I}sland ; larval life ; larval growth ; otoliths ; {V}al ; {REUNION}}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ybium}, volume = {30}, numero = {1}, pages = {27--33}, ISSN = {0399-0974}, year = {2006}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053295}, }
