@article{fdi:010053114, title = {{H}air trace elements concentration to describe polymetallic mining waste exposure in {B}olivian {A}ltiplano}, author = {{B}arbieri, {F}lavia and {C}ournil, {A}mandine and {S}arkis, {J}. {E}. {S}. and {B}{\'e}n{\'e}fice, {E}ric and {G}ardon, {J}acques}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}evere polymetallic contamination is frequently observed in the mining communities of {B}olivian {A}ltiplano. {W}e evaluated hair trace elements concentrations at the population level to characterise exposure profile in different contexts of contact with mining and metallurgical pollution. {W}e sampled 242 children aged 7 to 12 years in schools from five {O}ruro districts located in different contexts of potential contamination. {H}air trace elements concentrations were measured using {ICP}-{MS} ({P}b, {A}s, {H}g, {C}d, {S}b, {S}n, {B}i, {A}g, {N}i, {S}e, {C}u, {C}r, {M}n, {C}o and {Z}n). {W}e compared concentration according to school areas and gender. {C}oncentrations were markedly different depending on school areas. {C}hildren from schools near industrial areas were far more exposed to non essential elements than children from downtown and suburban schools, as well as the rural school. {T}he most concentrated non-essential element was {P}b (geometric means ({SD}): 1.6 (1.3) mu g/g in rural school; 2.0 (2.3) mu g/g in suburban school; 2.3 (3.0) mu g/g in downtown school; 14.1 (2.7) mu g/g in the mine school and 21.2 (3.3) mu g/g in the smelter school). {B}oys showed higher levels for all non-essential elements while girls had higher levels of {Z}n. {H}air trace elements concentrations highlighted the heterogeneity of exposure profiles, identifying the most contaminated districts.}, keywords = {{ICP}-{MS} ; {P}rincipal components ; {B}olivian mining city ; {P}olymetallic mining waste ; {H}uman population ; {B}iomarker}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}iological {T}race {E}lement {R}esearch}, volume = {139}, numero = {1}, pages = {10--23}, ISSN = {0163-4984}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1007/s12011-010-8641-1}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053114}, }
