@article{fdi:010053078, title = {{S}eismological study of the central {E}cuadorian margin : evidence of upper plate deformation}, author = {{B}ethoux, {N}. and {S}egovia, {M}. and {A}lvarez, {V}. and {C}ollot, {J}ean-{Y}ves and {C}harvis, {P}hilippe and {G}ailler, {A}. and {M}onfret, {T}ony}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} seismic study of a segment of the convergent margin of {E}cuador is presented. {D}uring the {SISTEUR} campaign a network of 24 {O}cean {B}ottom {S}eismometers ({OBS}) was deployed on the {C}arnegie {R}idge, one line along the main axes of the ridge and two lines across the strike of the edge of the ridge, during one month. {T}his marine network was complemented with a land network of 20 stations distributed in two lines: one parallel to the margin and the other perpendicular to it. {T}he seismic event recorded by these networks, were located using different crustal models defined from the wide-angle seismic data modeling. {R}elative location techniques were used to improve earthquake locations. {S}eismogram waveform modeling allowed us to constrain hypocentral location for events farther than similar to 50 km from the network. {T}his modeling also provided additional information to constrain the focal mechanisms of these events. {T}he upper limit of the {I}nterplate {S}eismogenic {Z}one ({ISZ}) is estimated to be at a 10 km depth in the region. {T}he background seismic activity of the upper plate provided new insights: 1) {A} seismic cluster that reaches the base of the overriding plate is linked to the {J}ipijapa-{P}ortoviejo fault. {T}he reactivation of this {Q}uaternary fault is confirmed by focal mechanisms that provide rupture planes parallel to its superficial projection ({N}10 degrees-{N}25 degrees). 2) {T}he focal mechanisms presented in this study are compatible with a homogeneous regional stress field corresponding to an {E}-{W} to {ESE}-{WNW} compression and an {NNE}-{SSW} extension. {T}he presence of strike-slip deformation, with a reverse component, corresponds to the {NNE} escape of the {N}orth {A}ndean {B}lock. {N}ormal faulting accommodating this movement suggests that this part of the {N}orth {A}ndean {B}lock cannot be considered as a rigid block.}, keywords = {{S}eismicity ; {D}eformation ; {E}cuadorian margin ; {N}orth {A}ndean block}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {31}, numero = {1}, pages = {139--152}, ISSN = {0895-9811}, year = {2011}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jsames.2010.08.001}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053078}, }
