@article{fdi:010053056, title = {{S}easonality change and the third millennium {BP} rainforest crisis in southern {C}ameroon ({C}entral {A}frica)}, author = {{N}gomanda, {A}. and {N}eumann, {K}. and {S}chweizer, {A}. and {M}aley, {J}ean}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he third millennium {BP} crisis of the central {A}frican rainforest is not {S}ufficiently understood. {T}he low resolution of most pollen profiles and a large plateau of the calibration {C}urve aggravate the exact dating of the event, and its causal climatic parameters are debated. {W}e present a high-resolution pollen profile from the swamp site {N}yabessan in the {S}outhern {C}ameroonian rainforest, covering the period 3100-2300 cal yr {BR} {B}etween 3100 and 2500 cal yr {BP}, the climate was favourable for a regional evergreen forest with {C}aesalpiniaceae and {L}ophira and a local {R}aphia swamp forest. {A}round 2500/2400 cal yr {BP}, a significant decrease of mature forest and swamp forest taxa and an increase of pioneers indicate that the rain forest was seriously disturbed and replaced by secondary formations. {T}he dominance of {T}rema orientalis, a pioneer well adapted to seasonal desiccation, points to a much more accentuated seasonality after 2500 cal yr {BP}, which seems to be linked to a {S}outhwards shift of the {ITCZ} during the northern hemisphere winter months. {W}e propose that the rain forest crisis between 2500 and 2200 cal {BP} created favourable conditions for farming and paved the way for a major expansion of {B}antu speaking {P}opulations.}, keywords = {{C}limatic change ; {S}easonality ; {ITCZ} ; pioneer forest ; {T}rema orientalis ; {B}antu expansion}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{Q}uaternary {R}esearch}, volume = {71}, numero = {3}, pages = {307--318}, ISSN = {0033-5894}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1016/j.yqres.2008.12.002}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010053056}, }
