@article{fdi:010052945, title = {{L}ocal and remote impacts of a tropical {A}tlantic salinity anomaly}, author = {{M}ignot, {J}uliette and {F}rankignoul, {C}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he climatic impacts of an enhanced evaporation prescribed during 50 years in the tropical {A}tlantic are investigated in a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model. {L}ocally, the salinity increase leads to a rapid deepening and cooling of the surface mixed layer. {T}his induces a deepening of the equatorial undercurrent and an intensification of the south equatorial current. {A} remote atmospheric response to the tropical {A}tlantic perturbation is detected in the {N}orth {A}tlantic sector after ten years. {I}t has the form of a robust wave-like tropospheric perturbation seemingly excited by the weakening of atmospheric deep convection over the {A}mazonian basin. {M}eanwhile, the salt anomaly is carried northward by the mean oceanic circulation. {I}t is traced up to the convection sites and then on its return path at depth towards lower latitudes. {C}onsistent with the density increase, deep convection is enhanced after the arrival of the salt anomaly and the {A}tlantic meridional overturning circulation ({AMOC}) intensifies about 20 years after the beginning of the perturbation. {T}he adjustment of the tropical {A}tlantic to the {AMOC} intensification then modifies its initial response to the freshwater forcing, leading to a weaker cooling in the northern tropical {A}tlantic than in the southern tropical {A}tlantic, a slight northward shift of the tropical {A}tlantic precipitation pattern and an intensification of the {N}orth {B}razil current. {O}n the other hand, no significant anomalous precipitations are found in the {P}acific. {T}he initial remote atmospheric response is also modulated, by an {NAO}-like response to the {AMOC} intensification.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}limate {D}ynamics}, volume = {35}, numero = {7-8}, pages = {1133--1147}, ISSN = {0930-7575}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1007/s00382-009-0621-9}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010052945}, }
