@article{fdi:010052931, title = {{C}harophytes as bio-indicators for lake level high stand at "{T}rou au {N}atron", {T}ibesti, {C}had, during the {L}ate {P}leistocene}, author = {{S}ouli{\'e}-{M}arsche, {I}. and {B}ieda, {S}. and {L}afond, {R}. and {M}aley, {J}ean and {M}'{B}aitoudji, and {V}incent, {P}. {M}. and {F}aure, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he present paper deals with the charophytes collected by {H}. {F}aure and {P}. {M}. {V}incent from outcrops of lacustrine deposits inside the caldera "{T}rou au {N}atron" at an altitude of 1875 m above sea level. {C}haraceae represent up to 93% of these carbonates and characterise a new type of sediment, defined as "{C}haraceite". {T}he remains consist in vegetative (thallus) fragments and in gyrogonites (the calcified fructifications of the {C}haraceae). {T}he presence of both these types of materials and their high frequency indicate in situ fossilisation of the former fresh water vegetation, termed a "charophyte meadow". {T}he topographical position of the deposits corresponds to a rocky plateau or bench on the slopes of the caldera, located c. 300 m above the present-day floor of the caldera. {T}he development and preservation of the charophytes lead to conclude that the lake was at least 300 m deep at the time when the plants grew. {R}adiocarbon dating of the thallus fragments provided an age of 14,260 +/- 300 yr {B}.{P}. {T}his age is consistent with analyses obtained previously on gastropod shells from {T}rou au {N}atron and indicates high lake level in the {T}ibesti {M}ountains during the {L}ate {P}leistocene.}, keywords = {characeite ; crater lake ; radiocarbon dating ; {L}ast {G}lacial {M}aximum ; ({LGM}) ; {S}ahara ; palaeobathymetry}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{G}lobal and {P}lanetary {C}hange}, volume = {72}, numero = {4}, pages = {334--340}, ISSN = {0921-8181}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1016/j.gloplacha.2010.05.004}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010052931}, }
