@article{fdi:010052917, title = {{S}ystematics and molecular phylogeny of two {A}frican stem borer genera, {S}ciomesa {T}ams & {B}owden and {C}arelis {B}owden ({L}epidoptera : {N}octuidae)}, author = {{M}oyal, {P}ascal and {L}e {R}ΓΌ, {B}runo and {C}onlong, {D}. and {C}ugala, {D}. and {D}efabachew, {B}. and {M}atama-{K}auma, {T}. and {P}allangyo, {B}. and {V}an den {B}erg, {J}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}urrently, the systematics of the {A}frican noctuid stem borers of the subtribe {S}esamiina, which include major pests of cereals, is confused. {I}n addition, their ecology is poorly known, as are the factors influencing their evolution. {I}n this paper, we address these shortcomings for two genera of the {S}esamiina, {S}ciomesa {T}ams & {B}owden and {C}arelis {B}owden. {M}ixed {B}ayesian phylogenetic analysis, which included their host plants and two mitochondrial genes, showed the genus {S}ciomesa to be polyphyletic. {T}wo new genera were created, {P}irateolea and {F}eraxinia. {T}he genus {C}arelis proved to be paraphyletic and was subdivided into two sub-genera. {T}he genera {S}ciomesa, {C}arelis and {P}irateolea (named the '{S}ciomesa genus group') share morphological traits, and the phylogenetic analysis showed that they had a common ancestor living on {C}yperaceae and that they were distant from the genus {F}eraxinia belonging to another clade which had an ancestor living on {P}oaceae. {S}even new species were described: {S}ciomesa gnosia sp. n., {S}ciomesia bua sp. n., {P}irateolea nola gen. n, sp. n., {F}eraxinia serena gen. n., sp. n., {C}arelis australis sp. n., {C}arelis transversa sp. n. and {C}arelis agnae sp. n. {T}en species were sunk as synonyms: {S}ciomesa mesoscia ({H}ampson) syn. n., {S}ciomesa mirifica {L}aporte syn. n., {S}ciomesa constantini {L}aporte syn. n. and {S}ciomesa etchecopari {L}aporte syn. n. are synonyms of {S}ciomesa mesophaea ({A}urivillius); {A}crapex sparsipucta {L}aporte syn. n. is a synonym of {S}ciomesa excelsa ({L}aporte) comb. n.; {A}crapex congitae {L}aporte syn. n., {S}esamia minuta {L}aporte syn. n. and {S}esamia minuscula {L}aporte syn. n. are synonyms of {S}ciomesa boulardi ({L}aporte) comb. n.; {A}crapex bryae {L}aporte syn. n. and {A}crapex fayei {L}aporte syn. n. are synonyms of {F}eraxinia jemjemensis ({L}aporte) comb. n. {E}leven new combinations were created: {S}ciomesa excelsa ({L}aporte) comb. n., {S}ciomesa boulardi ({L}aporte) comb. n., {S}ciomesa punctipennis ({K}ruger) comb. n., {P}irateolea piscator ({F}letcher) comb. n., {P}irateolea argocyma ({F}letcher) comb. n., {P}irateolea cyclophora ({F}letcher) comb. n., {P}irateolea ochroneura ({F}letcher) comb. n., {P}irateolea funebris ({K}ruger) comb. n., {F}eraxinia nyei ({F}letcher) comb. n., {F}eraxinia jemjemensis ({L}aporte) comb. n. and {C}arelis biluma ({N}ye) comb. n.}, keywords = {{A}pameini ; {C}arelis ; {F}eraxinia ; monocotyledons ; {N}octuidae ; {P}irateolea ; {S}ciomesa ; {S}esamiina ; stem borer}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}ulletin of {E}ntomological {R}esearch}, volume = {100}, numero = {6}, pages = {641--659}, ISSN = {0007-4853}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1017/s0007485309990721}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010052917}, }
