@article{fdi:010051896, title = {{MADS} box genes in oil palm ({E}laeis guineensis): {P}atterns in the evolution of the {SQUAMOSA}, {DEFICIENS}, {GLOBOSA}, {AGAMOUS}, and {SEPALLATA} subfamilies}, author = {{A}dam, {H}{\'e}l{\`e}ne and {J}ouannic, {S}tefan and {M}orcillo, {F}abienne and {R}ichaud, {F}r{\'e}d{\'e}rique and {D}uval, {Y}ves and {T}regear, {J}ames}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{MADS} box genes code for a large family of transcription factors which regulate development in higher plants, notably flower formation. {W}e describe here a study of members of the {MADS} box gene family in oil palm ({E}laeis guineensis {J}acq.), a representative of the family {A}recaceae and order {A}recales, a key group of monocotyledons which has been unreported in previous phylogenetic reconstructions of the different recognized clades of {MADS} box genes. {I}n this study, 13 oil palm {MADS} box genes were identified and characterized. {T}hey were found to belong to five different subfamilies, namely, the previously defined {SQUAMOSA}, {AGAMOUS}, {AGAMOUS}-like2, {DEFICIENS}, and {GLOBOSA} groups. {G}enes belonging to each of these groups play a critical role in the determination of flower structure as defined by the {ABCDE} model. {T}he in planta expression profiles of the oil palm {MADS} box genes were studied by {RT}-{PCR} and phylogenetic sequence diversity within individual subfamilies was investigated by comparing their deduced protein sequences with those of other angiosperms. {M}ost of the oil palm sequences studied were observed to group with distinct supported clades within their subfamily. {S}ome unexpected groupings were observed between monocot sequences (including oil palm ones) of non-{P}oaceae origin, probably illustrating the importance of obtaining adequate taxon representation in monocot molecular phylogenies.}, keywords = {{MADS} box ; oil palm ; flower ; homeotic ; arecales ; phylogeny ; monoecious}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {M}olecular {E}volution}, volume = {62}, numero = {1}, pages = {15--31}, ISSN = {0022 2844}, year = {2006}, DOI = {10.1007/s00239-005-0333-7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010051896}, }
