@article{fdi:010049708, title = {{T}he {H}olocene {P}ucon eruption of {V}olcan {V}illarrica, {C}hile : deposit architecture and eruption chronology}, author = {{S}ilva {P}arejas, {C}. and {D}ruitt, {T}. {H}. and {R}obin, {C}laude and {M}oreno, {H}. and {N}aranjo, {J}. {A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {P}ucn eruption was the largest {H}olocene explosive outburst of {V}olcan {V}illarrica, {C}hile. {I}t discharged > 1.0 km(3) of basaltic-andesite magma and > 0.8 km(3) of pre-existing rock, forming a thin scoria-fall deposit overlain by voluminous ignimbrite intercalated with pyroclastic surge beds. {T}he deposits are up to 70 m thick and are preserved up to 21 km from the present-day summit, post-eruptive lahar deposits extending farther. {T}wo ignimbrite units are distinguished: a lower one ({P}1) in which all accidental lithic clasts are of volcanic origin and an upper unit ({P}2) in which basement granitoids also occur, both as free clasts and as xenoliths in scoria. {P}2 accounts for similar to 80% of the erupted products. {F}ollowing the initial scoria fallout phase, {P}1 pyroclastic flows swept down the northern and western flanks of the volcano, magma fragmentation during this phase being confined to within the volcanic edifice. {F}ollowing a pause of at least a couple of days sufficient for wood devolatilization, eruption recommenced, the fragmentation level dropped to within the granitoid basement, and the pyroclastic flows of {P}2 were erupted. {T}he first {P}2 flow had a highly turbulent front, laid down ignimbrite with large-scale cross-stratification and regressive bedforms, and sheared the ground; flow then waned and became confined to the southeastern flank. {F}ollowing emplacement of pyroclastic surge deposits all across the volcano, the eruption terminated with pyroclastic flows down the northern flank. {M}ultiple lahars were generated prior to the onset of a new eruptive cycle. {C}harcoal samples yield a probable eruption age of 3,510 +/- 60 {C}-14 years {BP}.}, keywords = {{V}illarrica {V}olcano ; {P}ucon eruption ; {P}yroclastic flow ; {I}gnimbrite ; {R}adiocarbon age}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}ulletin of {V}olcanology}, volume = {72}, numero = {6}, pages = {677--692}, ISSN = {0258-8900}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1007/s00445-010-0348-9}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049708}, }
