@article{fdi:010049597, title = {{D}iagnosis of iron deficiency anemia in children of {N}ortheast {B}razil = {D}iagnóstico de anemia por defi ci{\^e}ncia de ferro em crian{\c{c}}as do {N}ordeste do {B}rasil}, author = {{C}arvalho, {A}. {G}. {C}. and de {L}ira, {P}. {I}. {C}. and {B}arros, {M}. {D}. {A}. and {A}lessio, {M}. {L}. {M}. and {L}ima, {M}. {D}. and {C}arbonneau, {M}. {A}. and {B}erger, {J}acques and {L}eger, {C}. {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{OBJECTIVE}: {T}o diagnose iron deficiency anemia in children. {METHODS}: {T}he study was conducted with a sample of 301 children aged six to 30 months attending public daycare centers in the city of {R}ecife, {N}ortheast {B}razil, in 2004. {T}he diagnoses of anemia were based on a combination of different hematological and biochemical parameters: hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, ferritin, {C}-reactive protein, transferrin saturation and transferrin receptor. {T}he chi-square test and {ANOVA} were used in the statistical analysis. {RESULTS}: {O}f all children studied, 92.4% had anemia ({H}b <110 g/{L}) and 28.9% had moderate/severe anemia ({H}b <90 g/{L}). {L}ower levels of hemoglobin were found in children aged 6-17 months. {I}ron deficiency was found in 51.5% of children using ferritin (<12 mu g/{L}) as parameter. {T}aking into consideration the combination of hemoglobin level, ferritin and transferrin receptor, 58.1% had anemia with iron deficiency, 34.2% had anemia without iron deficiency and 2.3% had iron deficiency without anemia. {M}ean ferritin concentration was significantly higher in children with high {C}-reactive protein when compared with those with normal levels (22.1 vs. 14.8 mu g/{L}). {CONCLUSIONS}: {T}he use of several biochemical and hematological parameters allowed to diagnosing iron deficiency anemia in two thirds of children, suggesting a need to identify other determinants of anemia without iron deficiency.}, keywords = {{A}nemia, {I}ron {D}eficiency, diagnosis ; {F}erritins, blood ; {L}aboratory ; {T}echniques and {P}rocedures ; {H}ematologic {T}ests ; {I}ron {D}eficiency, ; prevention and control ; {I}nfant {N}utrition ; {C}hild {N}utrition}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}evista de {S}aude {P}ublica}, volume = {44}, numero = {3}, pages = {513--519}, ISSN = {0034-8910}, year = {2010}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049597}, }
