A 0 5 degrees C criterion for the isothermal layer and its equivalent in density change for the mixed layer are found to be the most adaptable due to their robustness. Barrier layers observed with ARAMIS data sets are in good agreement with climatologies and in-situ Argo floats along the route Three systems of barrier layers are observed during the voyages Their variability and formation as described in previous works concerned with the tropical Atlantic are analyzed.
