({R}ubiaceae) in {A}frica and {M}adagascar}, author = {{A}nthony, {F}ran{\c{c}}ois and {D}iniz, {L}. {E}. {C}. and {C}ombes, {M}arie-{C}hristine and {L}ashermes, {P}hilippe}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}hylogeographic analysis of the {C}offea subgenus {C}offea was performed using data on plastid {DNA} sequences and interpreted in relation to biogeographic data on {A}frican rain forest flora. {P}arsimony and {B}ayesian analyses of trn{L}-{F}, trn{T}-{L} and atp{B}-rbc{L} intergenic spacers from 24 {A}frican species revealed two main clades in the {C}offea subgenus {C}offea whose distribution overlaps in west equatorial {A}frica. {C}omparison of trn{L}-{F} sequences obtained from {G}en{B}ank for 45 {C}offea species from {C}ameroon, {M}adagascar, {G}rande {C}omore and the {M}ascarenes revealed low divergence between {A}frican and {M}adagascan species, suggesting a rapid and radial mode of speciation. {A} chronological history of the dispersal of the {C}offea subgenus {C}offea from its centre of origin in {L}ower {G}uinea is proposed. {N}o relation was found between phylogenetic topology and the age of emergence of the volcanic islands that {C}offea species have colonised in the {I}ndian {O}cean, suggesting dispersal from mainland {A}frica after the emergence of the youngest island, {G}rande {C}omore, 500,000 years ago. {A}dditional sequences were obtained from {G}en{B}ank for 24 species of other {R}ubiaceae genera, including the {R}ubia genus whose origin has been dated from the {U}pper {M}iocene. {E}stimates of substitution rates suggested that diversification in {C}offea subgenus {C}offea occurred about 460,000 years ago or as recently as the last 100,000 years, depending on the cp{DNA} region considered and calibration. {T}he phylogenetic relationships based on plastid sequences confirmed biogeographic differentiation of coffee species, but they were not congruent with morphological and biochemical classifications, or with the capacity to grow in specific environments. {E}xamples of convergent evolution in the main clades are given using characters of leaf size, caffeine content and reproductive mode.}, keywords = {{A}frica ; {B}iogeography ; {C}offea ; {E}volution ; {P}hylogeny ; {P}lastid sequences ; {R}ubiaceae}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}lant {S}ystematics and {E}volution}, volume = {285}, numero = {1-2}, pages = {51--64}, ISSN = {0378-2697}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1007/s00606-009-0255-8}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049386}, }
