@article{fdi:010049267, title = {{P}hylogenetic analyses of symbiotic genes and characterization of functional traits of {M}esorhizobium spp. strains associated with the promiscuous species {A}cacia seyal {D}el.}, author = {{D}iouf, {D}. and {F}all, {D}. and {C}haintreuil, {C}l{\'e}mence and {B}a, {A}. {T}. and {D}reyfus, {B}ernard and {N}eyra, {M}arc and {N}doye, {I}. and {M}oulin, {L}ionel}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A}ims: {T}o assess the phenotypic, symbiotic and genotypic diversity scope of {M}esorhizobium spp. strains associated with {A}cacia seyal ({D}el.) isolated from different agro-ecological zones in {S}enegal, and uses of susceptible microbial inoculum in a reafforestation process. {M}ethods and {R}esults: {A} polyphasic approach including phenotypic and genotypic techniques was used to study the diversity and their relationships with other biovars and species of rhizobia. {T}he geographical origins of the strains have limited effect on their phylogenetic and phenotypic classification. {N}odulation tests indicated promiscuity of the strains studied, because they were capable of nodulating six woody legume species ({A}cacia auriculiformis, {A}cacia senegal, {A}. seyal, {A}cacia tortilis ssp. raddiana, {L}eucaena leucocephala and {P}rosopis juliflora). {S}equencing and phylogenetic analyses of nod{A}, nod{C} and nif{H} genes pointed out that in contrast to nod{A} gene, the phylogenies of nod{C} and nif{H} genes were not consistent with that of 16{S} r{RNA}, indicating that these genes of the {A}. seyal-nodulating rhizobia might have different origins. {M}icrobial inoculation on nonsterile soil had significant effect on the nodules number and the growth of the seedlings, indicating that these strains of rhizobia might be used as inoculum. {C}onclusions: {T}he results indicated that {A}. seyal is a nonselective host that can establish effective symbiosis with {M}esorhizobium spp. strains from diverse genomic backgrounds and that the selected {A}. seyal-nodulating rhizobia could enhance plant growth. {S}ignificance and {I}mpact of the {S}tudy: {T}hese results showed the important role that {A}. seyal could play in the improvement of reafforestation process as a promiscuous host, which can establish effective symbiosis with rhizobia from diverse genomic backgrounds.}, keywords = {{A}cacia seyal ; {DNA} fingerprinting ; nitrogen fixation ; phylogeny ; {R}hizobium ; {S}enegal ; symbiosis}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}pplied {M}icrobiology}, volume = {108}, numero = {3}, pages = {818--830}, ISSN = {1364-5072}, year = {2010}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1365-2672.2009.04500.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049267}, }
