@article{fdi:010049257, title = {{C}arbon content in amazonian oxisols after forest conversion to pasture}, author = {{S}ilva da, {M}. {L}. and {D}esjardins, {T}hierry and {S}arrazin, {M}ax and {M}elo de, {V}. {S}. and {M}artins, {P}. {F}. {D}. and {S}antos, {E}. {R}. and {C}arvalho de, {C}. {J}. {R}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}oil plays an important role in the {C} cycle, and substitution of tropical forest by cultivated land affects {C} dynamic and stock. {T}his study was developed in an area of expansion of human settlement in the {E}astern {A}mazon, in {I}tupiranga, {S}tate of {P}ara, to evaluate the effects of native forest conversion to {B}rachiaria brizantha pasture on {C} contents of a dystrophic {O}xisol. {S}oil samples were collected in areas of native forest ({NF}), of 8 to 10 year old secondary forest ({SF}), 1 to 2 year old {SF} ({P}1-2), 5 to 7 year old {SF} ({P}5-7), and of 10 to 12 year old {SF} ({P}10-12), and from under pastures, in the layers 0-2, 2-5 and 5-10 cm, to evaluate {C} levels and stocks and carry out separation of {OM} based on particle size. {A}fter deforestation, soil density increased to a depth of 5 cm, with greater increase in older pastures. {V}ariation in {C} levels was greatest in the top soil layer; {C} contents increased with increasing pasture age. {I}n the layers 2-5 and 5-10 cm, {C} content proved to be stable for the types of plant cover evaluated. {H}ighest {C} concentrations were found in the silt fraction; however, {C} contents were highest in the clay fraction, independent of the plant cover. {A}n increase in {C} associated with the sand fraction in the form of little decomposed organic residues was observed in pastures, confirming greater sensitivity of this fraction to change in soil use.}, keywords = {soil carbon stock ; particle-size fractions ; tropical soil ; {A}mazon rain forest}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}evista {B}rasileira de {C}iencia do {S}olo}, volume = {33}, numero = {6}, pages = {1603--1611}, ISSN = {0100-0683}, year = {2009}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049257}, }
