@article{fdi:010049222, title = {{T}he complete genome sequence of {X}anthomonas albilineans provides new insights into the reductive genome evolution of the xylem-limited {X}anthomonadaceae}, author = {{P}ieretti, {I}. and {R}oyer, {M}. and {B}arbe, {V}. and {C}arrere, {S}. and {K}oebnik, {R}alf and {C}ociancich, {S}. and {C}ouloux, {A}. and {D}arrasse, {A}. and {G}ouzy, {J}. and {J}acques, {M}. {A}. and {L}auber, {E}. and {M}anceau, {C}. and {M}angenot, {S}. and {P}oussier, {S}. and {S}egurens, {B}. and {S}zurek, {B}oris and {V}erdier, {V}al{\'e}rie and {A}rlat, {M}. and {R}ott, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {T}he {X}anthomonadaceae family contains two xylem-limited plant pathogenic bacterial species, {X}anthomonas albilineans and {X}ylella fastidiosa. {X}. fastidiosa was the first completely sequenced plant pathogen. {I}t is insect-vectored, has a reduced genome and does not possess hrp genes which encode a {T}ype {III} secretion system found in most plant pathogenic bacteria. {X}. fastidiosa was excluded from the {X}anthomonas group based on phylogenetic analyses with r{RNA} sequences. {R}esults: {T}he complete genome of {X}. albilineans was sequenced and annotated. {X}. albilineans, which is not known to be insect-vectored, also has a reduced genome and does not possess hrp genes. {P}hylogenetic analysis using {X}. albilineans genomic sequences showed that {X}. fastidiosa belongs to the {X}anthomonas group. {O}rder of divergence of the {X}anthomonadaceae revealed that {X}. albilineans and {X}. fastidiosa experienced a convergent reductive genome evolution during their descent from the progenitor of the {X}anthomonas genus. {R}eductive genome evolutions of the two xylem-limited {X}anthomonadaceae were compared in light of their genome characteristics and those of obligate animal symbionts and pathogens. {C}onclusion: {T}he two xylem-limited {X}anthomonadaceae, during their descent from a common ancestral parent, experienced a convergent reductive genome evolution. {A}daptation to the nutrient-poor xylem elements and to the cloistered environmental niche of xylem vessels probably favoured this convergent evolution. {H}owever, genome characteristics of {X}. albilineans differ from those of {X}. fastidiosa and obligate animal symbionts and pathogens, indicating that a distinctive process was responsible for the reductive genome evolution in this pathogen. {T}he possible role in genome reduction of the unique toxin albicidin, produced by {X}. albilineans, is discussed.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{B}mc {G}enomics}, volume = {10}, numero = {}, pages = {616}, ISSN = {1471-2164}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1186/1471-2164-10-616}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010049222}, }
