@article{fdi:010048460, title = {{S}ediment budget of the {N}apo {R}iver, {A}mazon basin, {E}cuador and {P}eru}, author = {{L}araque, {A}lain and {B}ernal, {C}. and {B}ourrel, {L}uc and {D}arrozes, {J}. and {C}hristophoul, {F}. and {A}rmijos, {E}. and {F}raizy, {P}ascal and {P}ombosa, {R}. and {G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he {U}pstream-downstream sediment budget along the {N}apo {R}iver (100520 kill 2, 6300 m(3) s(-1)) was studied in the {A}ndean foothills of {E}cuador, at the west of the {A}mazon basin. {A} comparative study was made during four hydrological cycles (2001-2005) for three hydrological stations located upstream, and during one hydrological cycle (2004-2005) for the {F}ourth one located near the mouth of the {N}apo {R}iver (region of {I}quitos in {P}eru). {T}his analysis showed an unusual increase in the concentration of suspended sediment recorded for the western part of the {A}mazon plain. {L}ike the runoff (81 l s(-1) km(2)), which is a world's maximum, the erosion rate (1160 t km(-2) year(-1), i.e. 47% of total suspended solid ({TSS}) export at the exit of {E}cuador), one of the highest for a floodplain basin is the result of a stepper slope than in the rest of the {A}ndean foothills, where typically sedimentation phenomena are predominant, and can be explained in part by a greater tectonic activity. {S}imilar phenomenes were evidenced in small mountainous rivers in {N}ew {G}uinea ({M}illiman and {S}yvitski, 1992; {M}illiman, 1995). {O}n the headwaters of the {N}apo {R}iver drainage basin, the tectonic uplift causes the {P}astaza {M}egafan's existence. {T}his progressively diverts the {C}ourse of {N}apo {R}iver towards north and also provokes the remobilization of fine fluvial deposits. {M}oreover, this geodynamic trend is completed by the impact of volcanic eruption, earthquakes and landslides. {T}he combination of these phenomena, so common in the region, has provided a large sediment transfer, not only at present but also in the past, as can be confirmed by the presence of incised terraces, mainly formed by volcanic materials. {T}hen, these results were compared with a similar {S}tudy carried out further south in the {M}adeira basin at the {B}olivian foothills. {T}hese studies show the spatio-temporal variability of the relation between sediment transfer and geodynamic processes at the {A}ndean {P}iedmont.}, keywords = {{A}mazon {R}iver basin ; sediment yield ; tectonics ; {P}astaza {M}egafan ; {A}ndes ; {N}apo basin}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ydrological {P}rocesses}, volume = {23}, numero = {25}, pages = {3509--3524}, ISSN = {0885-6087}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1002/hyp.7463}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010048460}, }
