@article{fdi:010048365, title = {{T}ectonic control of erosion and sedimentation in the {A}mazon {B}asin of {B}olivia}, author = {{B}aby, {P}atrice and {G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup and {H}{\'e}rail, {G}{\'e}rard}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he western {A}mazon drainage basin, which extends from southern {C}olombia to northern {B}olivia, comprises the {C}ordillera {O}riental of the {A}ndes and its adjacent {F}oreland basin system. {I}n northern {B}olivia, the orogenic wedge of the eastern {A}ndes is very large, and its forward propagation controls the morphology of the {M}adeira drainage basin. {W}e consider here the erosion and sedimentation mass balance in this part of the {A}mazon {B}asin, estimated on the basis of recent sediment yield data, within the current tectonic and geomorphic framework. {T}he total suspended sediment ({TSS}) flux exported from the present orogenic wedge of northern {B}olivia has been estimated at 500-600 million t year(-1). {M}ore than 50% of the total sediment load crossing the {M}adeira foreland basin system is deposited. {T}he rest of the sediments (less than 46%) reaches the eastern {A}mazon {B}asin, bypassing the {B}razilian craton to the north. {T}he average mass of sediment that has been deposited from the late {M}iocene to the present in the {M}adeira foreland basin sedimentation system is less than that intercepted today, by a factor of about 2.4. {T}hese results can be interpreted as an increase in {B}olivian foreland basin flexural {S}ubsidence over time, associated with crust thickening and orogenic loading, and accentuated by the growing mass of retained sediments. {T}hey are consistent with the uplift rates of the {C}ordillera {O}riental, obtained from fission-track dating, which began increasing significantly around 10-15 {M}a.}, keywords = {{A}mazon ; {A}ndes ; {B}olivia ; erosion ; foreland basin system ; hydrology ; sedimentation ; tectonics}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ydrological {P}rocesses}, volume = {23}, numero = {22}, pages = {3225--3229}, ISSN = {0885-6087}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1002/hyp.7391}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010048365}, }
