@article{fdi:010048360, title = {{M}ixing processes in the {A}mazon {R}iver at the confluences of the {N}egro and {S}olimoes {R}ivers, {E}ncontro das {A}guas, {M}anaus, {B}razil}, author = {{L}araque, {A}lain and {G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup and {F}ilizola, {N}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he confluence of the rivers {N}egro and {S}olimoes gives birth to the {A}mazon {R}iver near {M}anaus ({B}razil). {A}t their confluence, these two rivers with their very different physical and geochemical characteristics provide an interesting example of the mixing of waters along a reach of approximately one-hundred kilometres. {T}he purpose of this article is to describe and explain the spatial configuration of the {S}olimoes-{N}egro {R}ivers mixing zone, based on a systematic sampling survey carried out in {S}eptember 1997, using a special sampler and an acoustic {D}oppler current profiler ({A}coustic {D}oppler {C}urrent {P}rofiler). {T}he waters of the {N}egro {R}iver differ from those of the {S}olimoes {R}iver in their lower velocity (0.3 vs 1 m s(-1)), conductivity (8 vs 80 mu {S} cm(-1) at 25 degrees {C}), turbidity (5 vs 80 {NTU}), p{H} (5.5 vs 7.0) and higher temperatures (by 1 degrees {C}). {D}ue to their higher density, the waters of the {S}olimoes {R}iver slide under those of the {N}egro {R}iver, and consequently, {N}egro {R}iver waters are located at the surface, close to the left bank, and {S}olimoes {R}iver waters are located at the bottom, close to the right blink. {T}he contact between the waters of the two rivers changes from a clearly defined vertical boundary to a diffuse horizontal boundary, as they move downstream. {T}he complete mixing process takes more than 30 h and 100 kin.}, keywords = {{A}mazon {R}iver ; {N}egro {R}iver ; {S}olimoes {R}iver ; hydrology ; suspended ; sediment ; confluence ; mixing water}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{H}ydrological {P}rocesses}, volume = {23}, numero = {22}, pages = {3131--3140}, ISSN = {0885-6087}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1002/hyp.7388}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010048360}, }
