@article{fdi:010048351, title = {{I}solation of a novel species of flavivirus and a new strain of {C}ulex flavivirus ({F}laviviridae) from a natural mosquito population in {U}ganda}, author = {{C}ook, {S}. and {M}oureau, {G}. and {H}arbach, {R}. {E}. and {M}ukwaya, {L}. and {G}oodger, {K}. and {S}senfuka, {F}. and {G}ould, {E}. and {H}olmes, {E}. {C}. and de {L}amballerie, {X}avier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he genus {F}lavivirus, which contains approximately 70 single-stranded, positive-sense {RNA} viruses, represents a unique model for studying the evolution of vector-borne disease, as it includes viruses that are mosquito-borne, tick-borne or have no known vector. {B}oth theoretical work and field studies suggest the existence of a large number of undiscovered flaviviruses. {R}ecently, the first isolation of cell fusing agent virus ({CFAV}) was reported from a natural mosquito population in {P}uerto {R}ico, and sequences related to {CFAV} have been discovered in mosquitoes from {T}hailand. {CFAV} had previously been isolated from a mosquito cell line in 1975 and represented the only known 'insect-only' flavivirus, appearing to replicate in insect cells alone. {A} second member of the 'insect-only' group, {K}amiti {R}iver virus ({KRV}), was isolated from {K}enyan mosquitoes in 2003. {A} third tentative member of the 'insect-only' group, {C}ulex flavivirus ({C}x{FV}), was first isolated in 2007 from {J}apan and further strains have subsequently been reported from the {A}mericas. {W}e report the discovery, isolation and characterization of two novel 'insect-only' flaviviruses from {E}ntebbe, {U}ganda: a novel lineage tentatively designated {N}akiwogo virus ({NAKV}) and a new strain of {C}x{FV}. {T}he individual mosquitoes from which these strains were isolated, identified retrospectively by using a reference molecular phylogeny generated using voucher specimens from the region, were {M}ansonia africana nigerrima and {C}ulex quinquefasciatus, respectively. {T}his represents the first isolation, to our knowledge, of a novel insect-only flavivirus from a {M}ansonia species and the first isolation of a strain of {C}x{FV} from {A}frica.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {G}eneral {V}irology}, volume = {90}, numero = {{P}art 11}, pages = {2669--2678}, ISSN = {0022-1317}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1099/vir.0.014183-0}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010048351}, }
