@article{fdi:010048174, title = {{C}onvergence of temperate and tropical stream fish assemblages}, author = {{I}banez, {C}. and {B}elliard, {J}. and {H}ughes, {R}. {M}. and {I}rz, {P}. and {K}amdem-{T}oham, {A}. and {L}amouroux, {N}. and {T}edesco, {P}ablo and {O}berdorff, {T}hierry}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he hypothesis of convergence takes the deterministic view that community (or assemblage) structure can be predicted from the environment, and that the environment is expected to drive evolution in a predictable direction. {H}ere we present results of a comparative study of freshwater fish assemblages from headwater streams in four continents ({E}urope, {N}orth {A}merica, {A}frica and {S}outh {A}merica), with the general objective of testing whether these assemblages display convergent structures under comparable environmental conditions (i.e. assemblage position in the stream longitudinal continuum). {W}e tested this hypothesis by comparing species richness and trophic guilds of those stream fish assemblages represented in available data from multiple sites on each continent. {I}ndependent of phylogenetic and historical constraints, fish assemblage richness and trophic structure in the four continents converged along the stream continua to a substantial degree. {F}or the four continents, assemblage richness increased, the proportion of invertivorous species decreased, and the proportion of omnivorous species increased from upstream to downstream, supporting theoretical predictions of the river continuum concept. {H}owever, the herbivore/detritivore and piscivore guilds were virtually absent from our small {E}uropean and {N}orth {A}merican stream sites, unlike our {A}frican and {S}outh {A}merican stream sites. {T}his divergence can be linked to differences in energy availability between temperate and tropical systems.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}cography}, volume = {32}, numero = {4}, pages = {658--670}, ISSN = {0906-7590}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1600-0587.2008.05591.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010048174}, }
