@article{fdi:010046336, title = {{P}ost-cropping change and dynamics in soil and vegetation properties after forest clearing : example of the semi-arid {M}ikea {R}egion ({S}outhwestern {M}adagascar)}, author = {{L}eprun, {J}ean-{C}laude and {G}rouzis, {M}ichel and {R}andriambanona, {H}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}his study concerns post-cultural dynamics in the semi-arid {S}outh-{W}est of {M}adagascar ({A}nalabo area, near the {M}ikea {F}orest). {A} synchronic comparison was performed on a set of abandoned fields plots aged from 2 to 30 years and on forest and savanna reference ecosystems, located on cambic arenosols developed from same {Q}uaternary dune sands. {T}he studied parameters concerned mainly a few physical and chemical soil properties (density, permeability, compaction, texture, {C}, {N}, {K}, {P} content). {I}mportant changes occur in the post-cultural succession: an increase of the soil density and compaction, and decrease of the soil upper layer permeability. {C}onsequently, slash and burn cultivation leads to a packing and an induration of the soil surface. {R}esults about edaphic indicators have shown that the physical parameters used better discriminate various stages of evolution than the chemical parameters do. {T}he multivariate analysis of soil indicators shows that vegetative succession over 30 years in a forest ecosystem cleared, burnt, cultivated and left, does not lead to features corresponding to a closed-canopy forest but rather to those of a tree savanna with open, mixed woody-herbaceous vegetation. {T}he primary dense dry deciduous regeneration of the primary forest is very low or nil. {I}n the semi-arid {SW} {M}adagascar ({A}nalabo region), post-cultural dynamics conditions consists in a savanna-formation process, controlled by: (1) the intensity and duration of the disturbance (during the cultivation phase); and (2) the more drastic environmental conditions (including both climate and soil). {T}o cite this article: {J}.-{C}. {L}eprun et al., {C}. {R}. {G}eoscience 341 (2009).}, keywords = {{A}bandoned fields ; {C} ; {N} ; {K} ; {P} ; {S}emi-arid ; {S}oil compaction ; {S}oil indicators ; {S}oil texture ; {S}oil permeability ; {P}ost-cultural change}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}omptes {R}endus {G}eoscience}, volume = {341}, numero = {7}, pages = {526--537}, ISSN = {1631-0713}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1016/j.crte.2009.07.001}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010046336}, }
