@article{fdi:010046171, title = {{P}olicy options for obesity in {E}urope : a comparison of public health specialists with other stakeholders}, author = {{G}onzalez-{Z}apata, {L}.{I}. and {A}lvarez-{D}ardet, {C}. and {O}rtiz-{M}oncada, {R}. and {C}lemente, {V}. and {M}illstone, {E}. and {H}oldsworth, {M}ichelle and {S}arri, {K}. and {T}arlao, {G}. and {H}orvath, {Z}. and {L}obstein, {T}. and {S}awa, {S}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{O}bjective: {T}o explore policy options that public health specialists ({PHS}) consider appropriate for combating obesity in {E}urope, and compare their preferences with those of other stakeholders (non-{PHS}). {D}esign: {S}tructured interviews using multicriteria mapping, a computer-based, decision-support tool. {S}etting: {N}ine {E}uropean countries. {S}ubjects: {A} total of 189 stakeholders. {T}wenty-seven interviewees were {PHS} and non-{PHS} included food, sports and health sectors. {M}easurements: {A} four-step approach was taken, i.e. selecting options, defining criteria, scoring options quantitatively and weighting the criteria to provide overall rankings of options. {I}nterviews were recorded and transcribed to yield qualitative data. {R}esults: {T}he {PHS} concur with other stakeholders interviewed, as all emphasised the importance of educational initiatives in combating obesity, followed by policies to improve community sports facilities, introduce mandatory food labelling and controlling food and drink advertising. {F}urther analyses revealed several significant differences. {T}he non-{PHS} froth the private sector ranked institutional reforms favourably; the {PI}-{IS} froth non-{M}editerranean countries supported the option of medicines to prevent obesity; and those {PHS} from {M}editerranean countries endorsed the use of activity monitoring devices such as pedometers. {A}s far as appraisal criteria were concerned, {PHS} considered efficacy and the economic impact on the public sector to be the most important. {C}onclusion: {T}here is clear consensus among {PHS} and other stakeholders concerning the need for a package of policy options, which suggests that {E}uropean-wide implementation could be successful. {H}owever, it would be advisable to avoid more contentious policy options such as taxation until future changes in public opinion.}, keywords = {{O}besity ; {P}ublic policy ; {P}ublic health nutrition ; {F}ood and nutrition ; policy}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{P}ublic {H}ealth {N}utrition}, volume = {12}, numero = {7}, pages = {896--908}, ISSN = {1368-9800}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1017/s136898000800308x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010046171}, }
