  abstract = {{A}frica is the source of all modern humans, but characterization of genetic variation and of relationships among populations across the continent has been enigmatic. {W}e studied 121 {A}frican populations, four {A}frican {A}merican populations, and 60 non-{A}frican populations for patterns of variation at 1327 nuclear microsatellite and insertion/deletion markers. {W}e identified 14 ancestral population clusters in {A}frica that correlate with self-described ethnicity and shared cultural and/or linguistic properties. {W}e observed high levels of mixed ancestry in most populations, reflecting historical migration events across the continent. {O}ur data also provide evidence for shared ancestry among geographically diverse hunter-gatherer populations ({K}hoesan speakers and {P}ygmies). {T}he ancestry of {A}frican {A}mericans is predominantly from {N}iger-{K}ordofanian (similar to 71%), {E}uropean (similar to 13%), and other {A}frican (similar to 8%) populations, although admixture levels varied considerably among individuals. {T}his study helps tease apart the complex evolutionary history of {A}fricans and {A}frican {A}mericans, aiding both anthropological and genetic epidemiologic studies.},
