@article{fdi:010046049, title = {{P}araspecific neutralization of the venom of {A}frican species of cobra by an equine antiserum against {N}aja melanoleuca : a comparative study}, author = {{C}asasola, {A}. and {R}amos-{C}errillo, {B}. and de {R}oodt, {A}. {R}. and {S}aucedo, {A}. {C}. and {C}hippaux, {J}ean-{P}hilippe and {A}lagon, {A}. and {S}tock, {R}. {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{V}enoms of snakes belonging to the same {G}enera tend to share biochemical, toxinological and antigenic characteristics. {A}ccordingly, paraspecific neutralization of venom lethality by experimental antisera and commercial antivenoms has been reported. {W}e studied the spectrum of neutralization of lethality of an experimental monovalent equine antiserum against the strongly neurotoxic {A}frican forest cobra ({N}aja melanoleuca) when tested against venoms of most species of {A}frican {N}aja, both neuro and cytotoxic as described by some authors. {W}e report a comparison of the median lethal doses ({LD}50) of the venoms and the paraspecific median effective doses ({ED}50) of the antiserum calculated using three methods: {S}pearman-{K}arber and {P}robit (currently recommended by the {W}orld {H}ealth {O}rganization), and non-linear regression. {A}n ample - but not complete - spectrum of paraspecific neutralization of lethality was observed against both spitting and non-spitting species of {A}frican {N}aja with a clearly more efficient neutralization of the more potent venoms, the implications of which are discussed. {T}he median lethal and effective doses calculated by the three methods are remarkably consistent and may warrant consideration of non-linear regression methods for the calculation of venom lethality and antivenom potency by venom/antivenom researchers and producers.}, keywords = {{A}frican cobras ; {A}ntiserum ; {N}eutralization ; {P}araspecificity ; {C}alculation ; methods}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}oxicon}, volume = {53}, numero = {6}, pages = {602--608}, ISSN = {0041-0101}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1016/j.toxicon.2009.01.011}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010046049}, }
