@article{fdi:010046042, title = {{S}oil organic carbon stocks of {R}io {G}rande do {S}ul, {B}razil}, author = {{T}ornquist, {C}. {G}. and {G}iasson, {E}. and {M}ielniczuk, {J}. and {C}erri, {C}. {E}. {P}. and {B}ernoux, {M}artial}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}obust and accurate regional estimates of {C} storage in soils are currently an important research topic because of ongoing debate about human-induced changes in the terrestrial {C} cycle. {W}idely available geoprocessing tools were applied to estimate native soil organic {C} ({SOC}) stocks of {R}io {G}rande do {S}ul state in southern {B}razil to a depth of 30 cm from previously sampled soil pedons under undisturbed vegetation. {T}he study used a statewide comprehensive soil survey comprising a small-scale soil map, a climate map, and a soil pedon database. {S}oil organic {C} stocks under native vegetation were calculated with two different approaches: the {T}ier 1 method of the {I}ntergovernmental {P}anel on {C}limate {C}hange ({IPCC}) and a refined method based on actual field measurements derived from soil profile data. {H}ighest {SOC} stocks occurred in {N}eossolos {Q}uartzarenico hidromorfico ({A}quents), {O}rganossolos {T}iomorficos ({H}emists), {L}atossolos {B}runos ({U}dox), and {V}ertissolos {E}banicos ({U}derts) soil classes. {B}efore human use of soils, most {C} was stored in the {L}atossolos {V}ermelhos ({U}dox) and {N}eossolos {R}egoliticos ({O}rthents), which occupy a large area of {R}io {G}rande do {S}ul. {G}enerally, {IPCC} default reference {SOC} stocks compared well with {SOC} stocks calculated from soil pedons. {T}he total {SOC} stock of {R}io {G}rande do {S}ul was estimated at 1510.3 {T}g {C} (5.8 kg {C} m(-2)) by the {IPPC} method and 1597.5 +/- 363.9 {T}g {C} (7.4 +/- 1.9 kg {C} m(-2)) calculated from soil pedons. {T}he {SOC} digital map and {SOC} database developed in this study provide crucial background information for state-level contemporary assessment of {C} stocks and soil {C} sequestration programs and initiatives.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{S}oil {S}cience {S}ociety of {A}merica {J}ournal}, volume = {73}, numero = {3}, pages = {975--982}, ISSN = {0361-5995}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.2136/sssaj2008.0112}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010046042}, }
