@article{fdi:010044366, title = {{L}ow {CO}2 concentrations in the {G}ulf of {G}uinea during the upwelling season in 2006}, author = {{L}ef{\`e}vre, {N}athalie}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he fugacity of {CO}2 (f{CO}(2)) {W}as measured underway from 27 {M}ay to 5 {J}uly 2006 in the {G}ulf of {G}uinea when the upwelling conditions were taking place. {T}he equatorial and the coastal upwellings are responsible for the large {CO}2 outgassing observed in the tropical {A}tlantic. {T}he highest f{CO}(2) (655 mu atm) was measured in the eastern {C}oastal upwelling. {H}owever, area of low f{CO}(2) are also observed. {T}hose occurred north of 2 degrees {N}, in the {G}uinea {C}urrent, and near 6 degrees {S} close to the coast due to the {C}ongo {R}iver discharge. {T}he decrease of salinity is a major factor explaining low f{CO}(2). {I}n the {S}outh {E}quatorial {C}ounter {C}urrent region, south of 6 degrees {S} near 10 degrees {W}, low f{CO}(2) are not related to a salinity effect as this region is subject to excess evaporation. {A} comparison with the meridional transects of the {RMS} {S}t {H}elena made in 1995-1996 near 15 degrees {W} suggests that these low {ICO}2 or even slight undersaturations can be observed from about 4 degrees {S} to 10 degrees {S}. it seems that they occur mainly in boreal summer. {T}hey could be caused by transport of water that has been in contact with the atmosphere long enough to come close to equilibrium. {T}he low f{CO}(2) area are not reproduced by the {CO}2 climatology probably because of the coarse resolution and the lack of data in this region. {D}espite the low f{CO}(7) area observed in 2006, the {D}elta f{CO}(2) in 2006 is higher than the 1995 climatology for the region 10 degrees {S}-2 degrees {N}, 10 degrees {W}-10 degrees {E} suggesting that f{CO}(2) is increasing over time but from the few cruises available, it is difficult to definitely conclude.}, keywords = {f{CO}2 ; {G}ulf of {G}uinea ; {T}ropical {A}tlantic}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}arine {C}hemistry}, volume = {113}, numero = {1-2}, pages = {93--101}, ISSN = {0304-4203}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1016/j.marchem.2009.01.001}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044366}, }
