@article{fdi:010044344, title = {{M}editerranean spotted fever in {A}lgeria - new trends}, author = {{M}ouffok, {N}. and {P}arola, {P}. and {L}epidi, {H}. and {R}aoult, {D}idier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{I}ntroduction: {M}editerranean spotted fever ({MSF}) due to {R}ickettsia conorii is the most important tick-borne disease occurring in {N}orth {A}frica. {H}owever, there are only a few fragmentary reports on the epidemiology and clinical aspects of rickettsioses in {N}orth {A}frica, and cases are still rarely documented. {W}e report herein a prospective study conducted in {O}ran, the second largest city in {A}lgeria. {T}his disease has not been property described in {O}ran or in other {A}lgerian cities. {M}ethods: {A} total of 167 cases of {M}editerranean spotted fever were documented for the first time by the use of reference methods including immunofluorescence serology and {W}estern blot and absorption studies, including isolation in culture by the shell-vial. techniques, and molecular toots. {R}esults: {A}lthough some aspects of {MSF} were found to be in accordance with the general epidemiology of the disease, uncommon aspects were found, including increased incidence and the presence of multiple inoculation eschars in 12% of patients. {T}he role of climatic changes in alterations of host-seeking and feeding behaviors of the vectors, including the brown dog tick {R}hipicephalus sanguineus, is discussed. {A}lso, 49% of patients were hospitalized with a severe form. {T}he global death rate was 3.6%, but it was 54.5% in patients hospitalized with major neurological manifestations and multiorgan involvement. {C}onclusions: {T}he present report gives a unique panel of clinical aspects of {MSF} as well as new trends in this disease. {E}ntomological, climatic, and molecular studies are needed to better understand both epidemiological and clinical aspects of {MSF} ({C}) 2008 {I}nternational {S}ociety for {I}nfectious {D}iseases. {P}ublished by {E}lsevier {L}td. {A}ll rights reserved.}, keywords = {{R}ickettsia ; {M}editerranean spotted fever ; {R}ickettsiosis ; {T}icks ; {A}lgeria ; {A}frica}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nternational {J}ournal of {I}nfectious {D}iseases}, volume = {13}, numero = {2}, pages = {227--235}, ISSN = {1201-9712}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1016/j.ijid.2008.06.035}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044344}, }
