@article{fdi:010044338, title = {{A}edes ({D}iptera: {C}ulicidae) vectors of arboviruses in {M}ayotte ({I}ndian {O}cean) : distribution area and larval habitats}, author = {{B}agny, {L}e{\¨ie}la and {D}elatte, {H}{\'e}l{\`e}ne and {E}lissa, {N}. and {Q}uilici, {S}. and {F}ontenille, {D}idier}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}iological invasions generally induce profound effects on the structure of resident communities. {I}n {M}ayotte, where {A}edes aegypti and {A}e lilii were already present, the recent introduction of {A}e. albopictus raises public health concerns because it may affect the risk of arbovirus transmission. {E}ntomological surveys were carried out in six locations on the island following a transect defined by a gradient from urban to rural habitats during a dry and a wet season. {A} total of 438 larval habitats containing {A}edes spp. immature stages were surveyed. {W}e evaluated the characteristics of larval habitats and analyzed the field distribution of {A}edes spp. throughout {M}ayotte using generalized linear models. {A}rtificial containers used for water storage were significantly more productive for {A}e. albopictus immature stages than for {A}e. aegypti ones. {M}ost of natural larval habitats collected were colonized by {A}e. aegypti, and it was also the most common {A}edes species encountered in rural habitats. {C}onversely, {A}e. albopictus greatly predominated in urban and suburban habitats and during the dry season. {A}e. lilii was uncommon and occurred preferentially in leaf axillae and dead leaves on the ground. {A}e. albopictus has rapidly colonized the inhabited areas of {M}ayotte. {A} displacement of {A}e. aegypti populations by {A}e. albopictus populations in urban areas might be happening. {T}he increasing urbanization seems to greatly favor the presence of the invasive species. {T}hus, arbovirus surveillance programs should focus, as a priority, on areas where this vector is present because of a higher risk of emergence of an epidemic source of arboviruses.}, keywords = {{A}edes albopictus ; {A}edes aegypti ; {A}edes lilii ; larval ecology ; {M}ayotte}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {M}edical {E}ntomology}, volume = {46}, numero = {2}, pages = {198--207}, ISSN = {0022-2585}, year = {2009}, DOI = {10.1603/033.046.0204}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044338}, }
