@article{fdi:010044140, title = {{T}yrosol degradation via the homogentisic acid pathway in a newly isolated {H}alomonas strain from olive processing effluents}, author = {{L}iebgott, {P}ierre-{P}ol and {L}abat, {M}arc and {A}mouric, {A}gn{\`e}s and {T}holozan, {J}ean-{L}uc and {L}orquin, {J}ean}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}o isolate a new {H}alomonas sp. strain capable of degrading tyrosol, a toxic compound present in olive mill wastewater, through the homogentisic acid ({HGA}) pathway. {A} moderately halophilic {G}ram-negative bacterium belonging to the {H}alomonas genus and designated strain {TYRC}17 was isolated from olive processing effluents. {T}his strain was able to completely degrade tyrosol (2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-ethanol), a toxic compound found in such effluent. {T}yrosol degradation begins by an oxidation to 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid ({HPA}), which is then converted into {HGA} by an {HPA} 1-monooxygenase, while closest {H}alomonas species degrade tyrosol through 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid ({DHPA}). {I}n the presence of transition metals, {HGA} underwent a p{H}-dependent abiotic conversion into benzoquinone acetic acid, then into 2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (gentisaldehyde) and pyomelanin, by oxidative decarboxylation and polymerization, respectively. {T}yrosol degradation via {HGA} by the new {H}alomonas sp. strain {TYRC}17 was complete in the absence of trace elements. {I}n their presence, {HGA} was abiotically converted into gentisaldehyde and pyomelanin. {T}his is the first report on tyrosol degradation via the {HGA} pathway under hypersaline conditions and on the oxidative decarboxylation of {HGA} into gentisaldehyde. {I}t underlines the importance of the {H}alomonas genus in the bioremediation of toxic-contaminated sites.}, keywords = {{G}entisaldehyde ; {H}alomonas ; homogentisic acid ; pyomelanin ; tyrosol}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {A}pplied {M}icrobiology}, volume = {105}, numero = {6}, pages = {2084--2095}, ISSN = {1364-5072}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1365-2672.2008.03925.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044140}, }
