@article{fdi:010044037, title = {{N}ew and old complex recombinant {HIV}-1 strains among patients with primary infection in 1996-2006 in {F}rance : the {F}rench {ANRS} {CO}06 primo cohort study - art. no. 69}, author = {{F}range, {P}. and {G}alimand, {J}. and {V}idal, {N}icole and {G}oujard, {C}. and {D}eveau, {C}. and {S}ouala, {F}. and {P}eeters, {M}artine and {M}eyer, {L}. and {R}ouzioux, {C}. and {C}haix, {M}. {L}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {P}revalence of {HIV}-1 non-{B} subtypes has increased overtime in patients diagnosed at the time of primary infection ({PHI}) in {F}rance. {O}ur objective was to characterize in detail non-{B} strains which could not be genetically classified into the known subtypes/{C}irculating {R}ecombinant {F}orms ({CRF}s). {M}ethods: {A}mong 744 patients enrolled in the {ANRS} {PRIMO} {C}ohort since 1996, 176 (23.7%) were infected with {HIV}-1 non-{B} strains. {T}he subtype/{CRF} could not be identified in {RT} for 15 (2%). {T}he {V}3-{V}5 env region was sequenced and 3 strains (04{FR}-{KZS}, 06{FR}-{CRN}, 04{FR}-{AUK}) were full-length sequenced. {P}hylogenetic and bootscan analyses were used to characterize the mosaic structures. {R}esults: {A}mong {V}3-{V}5 sequences, 6 were divergent {A}, 2 distantly related to {E} or {D}, 2 {C}, 1 {B} and 2 remained unclassified. 04{FR}-{KZS}, isolated in a {C}ongolese woman infected in {F}rance, clustered with 2 previously described viruses from the {D}emocratic {R}epublic of {C}ongo. {T}hey represent {CRF}27_ cpx involving {A}/{E}/{G}/{H}/{J}/{K}/{U} subtypes. 06{FR}-{CRN}, isolated in a homosexual {C}aucasian patient, was a {B}/{C}/{U} recombinant involving a {B}razilian {C} strain. 04{FR}-{AUK}, isolated in a {C}ongolese patient infected in {F}rance, was a {A}/{K}/{CRF}09/{U} recombinant clustering from gag to vif with {HIV}-1 {MAL}. {O}thers {PHI} were further observed in 2006 -2007 with 1 {KZS} and 5 {CRN}-like viruses, suggesting their spread in {F}rance. {C}onclusion: {T}his study illustrates the increasing {HIV}-1 diversity in {F}rance associating new (06{FR}-{CRN}) and old ({CRF}27_cpx and "{MAL}-like" 04{FR}-{AUK}) strains, which are rare in their region of origin but may have a possible founder effect in {F}rance. {O}ur results strengthen the {F}rench guidelines recommending viro-epidemiological surveillance of {HIV}-1 diversity.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{R}etrovirology}, volume = {5}, numero = {69}, pages = {1}, ISSN = {1742-4690}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1186/1742-4690-5-69}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010044037}, }
