@article{fdi:010042759, title = {{R}esistance to {R}ice yellow mottle virus in rice germplasm in {M}adagascar}, author = {{R}akotomalala, {M}. and {P}inel {G}alzi, {A}gn{\`e}s and {A}lbar, {L}aurence and {G}hesqui{\`e}re, {A}lain and {R}abenantoandro, {Y}. and {R}amavovololona, {P}. and {F}argette, {D}enis}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{R}ice yellow mottle virus ({RYMV}) is a recent and major threat to rice production in {M}adagascar. {A} large scale screening of resistance to {RYMV} in rice germplasm in {M}adagascar was conducted by visual symptom scoring and virus-assessment through {ELISA} tests. {T}he response to virus inoculation of 503 local or introduced rice accessions was assessed. {M}ost of them were susceptible to {RYMV}. {A} few cultivars expressed partial resistance at a level similar to the partially resistant {O}ryza sativa japonica cv. {A}zucena. {O}nly one {O}. sativa cultivar expressed high resistance characterised by a lack of symptoms and an undetectable level of virus. {I}t was a {M}alagasy traditional indica cultivar, named {B}ekarosaka, which originated from the northwest of the country. {I}t was selected by farmers for its field resistance to {RYMV}. {T}he response of cv. {B}ekarosaka to four pathotypes of {RYMV} was similar to that of cv. {G}igante, the only other highly resistant indica cultivar. {T}he sequence of the middle domain of the e{IF}(iso)4{G}, the genetic determinant of {R}ymv1 resistance on chromosome 4, of cv. {B}ekarosaka was similar to that of cv. {G}igante. {S}ubsequently, cvs {B}ekarosaka and {G}igante probably carried the same resistance allele {R}ymv1-2. {R}ymv1-2 resistance was efficient against isolates of the major strains of {RYMV}, but was readily overcome by a pathotype from the northwest of {M}adagascar.}, keywords = {{P}articipatory plant breeding ; {R}ecessive resistance ; {R}esistance-breaking pathotypes}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{E}uropean {J}ournal of {P}lant {P}athology}, volume = {122}, numero = {2}, pages = {277--286}, ISSN = {0929-1873}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1007/s10658-008-9282-5}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010042759}, }
