@article{fdi:010042545, title = {{R}apid and major coastal subsidence during the late {M}iocene in south-central {C}hile}, author = {{E}ncinas, {A}. and {F}inger, {K}. {L}. and {N}ielsen, {S}. {N}. and {L}avenu, {A}lain and {B}uatois, {L}. {A}. and {P}eterson, {D}. {E}. and {L}e {R}oux, {J}. {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}edimentological and paleontological studies, including foraminifera, ostracodes, gastropods, and trace fossils, were carried {O}ut on {N}eogene sedimentary successions and offshore boreholes of south-central {C}hile (similar to 33 degrees-45 degrees {S}). {S}edimentology shows the occurrence of a thin, shallow marine, basal conglomerate overlain by a succession that includes the following facies: massive sandstones, conglomerates, interbedded siltstones and sandstones showing {B}ouma cycles, parallel-laminated sandstones, synsedimentary breccias, slides, slumps, diamictites, and massive siltstones. {T}hese facies were deposited by gravity flows, with turbidity currents and sandy debris flows as the main modes of deposition. {P}aleontology indicates the occurrence of trace fossils assigned to the {Z}oophycos ichnofacies and deep-water (similar to 2000 m) benthic foraminifers, ostracodes, and gastropods. {S}edimentology and paleontology indicate that deposition took place on a slope apron during a period of rapid and major forearc subsidence. {P}lanktic foraminifers indicate ages ranging from the late {M}iocene to the early {P}liocene (zones {N}16-{N}19) for these successions. {W}e attribute this episode of major {N}eogene subsidence to an important event of subduction erosion that would have retrieved the underside of the upper continental plate and caused its thinning.}, keywords = {late {M}iocene ; early {P}liocene ; south central {C}hile ; gravity flows ; foraminifers ; ostracodes ; gastropods ; {Z}oophycos ichnofacies ; continental slope ; forearc subsidence ; subduction erosion}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {S}outh {A}merican {E}arth {S}ciences}, volume = {25}, numero = {2}, pages = {157--175}, ISSN = {0895-9811}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jsames.2007.07.001}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010042545}, }
