@article{fdi:010042321, title = {{A}ssessing the impact of fisheries on demersal fish assemblages of the {M}auritanian continental shelf, 1987-1999, using dominance curves}, author = {{J}ouffre, {D}idier and {I}nejih, {C}.{A}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he assemblages of demersal fish and associated species of the {M}auritanian continental shelf are characterized on the basis of annual trawl surveys conducted during the period 1987-1999. {S}pecies composition is dominated by exploited species ({D}entex spp., {P}agellus bellottii, and {O}ctopus vulgaris). {D}ominance curves ({A}bundance {B}iomass {C}omparison plots) were used to evaluate the impact of fisheries, which have increased in magnitude over several decades. {T}he diagnosis of a "stressed" assemblage seems to converge with the results of a similar study conducted off {S}enegal, but here there was no trend in impact during the period of study. {T}he sensitivity of the present results to the various ways of considering the available taxonomic information is also analysed.
