  abstract = {{T}he success of export processing zones or the {Z}one {F}ranche in {M}adagascar since 1990 is, with the exception of {M}auritius, an isolated and unknown case in {A}frica. {T}his paper, based on first-hand data, explains that the {Z}one {F}ranche has had a highly significant macroeconomic impact in terms of exports and jobs. {W}e show that average wages in the {Z}one {F}ranche are equivalent to the other formal activity sectors, other things being equal, and that labor standards there are higher than average. {T}he {Z}one {F}ranche quickly recovered from the 2002 crisis and has benefited a great deal from {AGOA}. {T}he final phase-out of the {M}ulti-{F}ibre {A}rrangement in 2005 is expected to have a negative impact on the {Z}one {F}ranche.
