@article{fdi:010040981, title = {{M}ultidirectional cross-species painting illuminates the history of karyotypic evolution in {P}erissodactyla}, author = {{T}rifonov, {V}. {A}. and {S}tanyon, {R}. and {N}esterenko, {A}. {I}. and {F}u, {B}. {Y}. and {P}erelman, {P}. {L}. and {O}' {B}rien, {P}.{C}. {M}. and {S}tone, {G}. and {R}ubtsova, {N}. {V}. and {H}ouck, {M}. {L}. and {R}obinson, {T}. {J}. and {F}erguson {S}mith, {M}. {A}. and {D}obigny, {G}authier and {G}raphodatsky, {A}. {S}. and {Y}ang, {F}. {T}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he order {P}erissodactyla, the group of odd-toed ungulates, includes three extant families: {E}quidae, {T}apiridae, and {R}hinocerotidae. {T}he extremely rapid karyotypic diversification in perissodactyls has so far prevented the establishment of genome-wide homology maps between these three families by traditional cytogenetic approaches. {H}ere we report the first genome-wide comparative chromosome maps of {A}frican rhinoceroses, four tapir species, four equine species, and humans. {T}hese maps were established by multidirectional chromosome painting, with paint probes derived from flow-sorted chromosomes of {E}quus grevyi, {T}apirus indicus, and {C}eratotherium simum as well as painting probes from horse and human. {T}he {M}alayan tapir ({T}apirus indicus), {B}aird's tapir ({T}. bairdii), mountain tapir ({T}. pinchaque), lowland tapir ({T}. terrestris), and onager ({E}. hemionus onager), were studied by cross-species chromosome painting for the first time. {O}ur results, when integrated with previously published comparative chromosome maps of the other perissodactyl species, have enabled the reconstruction of perissodactyl, ceratomorph, and equid ancestral karyotypes, and the identification of the defining evolutionary chromosomal rearrangements along each lineage. {O}ur results allow a more reliable estimate of the mode and tempo of evolutionary chromosomal rearrangements, revealing a striking switch between the slowly evolving ceratomorphs and extremely rapidly evolving equids.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}hromosome {R}esearch}, volume = {16}, numero = {1}, pages = {89--107}, ISSN = {0967-3849}, year = {2008}, DOI = {10.1007/s10577-007-1201-7}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010040981}, }
