@article{fdi:010040974, title = {{B}ehavior of dolphinfish ({C}oryphaena hippurus) around drifting {FAD}s as observed from automated acoustic receivers}, author = {{T}aquet, {M}. and {D}agorn, {L}aurent and {G}aertner, {J}. {C}. and {G}irard, {C}harlotte and {A}umerruddy, {R}. and {S}ancho, {G}. and {I}tano, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}o study the behavior of dolphinfish ({C}oryphaena hippurus) around drifting {F}ish {A}ggregating {D}evices ({FAD}s), we tagged individuals with long-lived, coded sonic transmitters and attached automated sonic receivers to drifting {FAD}s in two regions of the {W}estern {I}ndian {O}cean. {A}mong the three tagging methods used in this study (surgery, external hooks, underwater bait without capture), the latest resulted in residence times significantly shorter than the other ones, likely due to regurgitation. {D}olphinfish tagged with the two other methods usually stayed several days associated to {FAD}s ({K}aplan-{M}eier survival analysis 5.09 days, mean 6.25 days, {SD} 4.39 days, maximum 15.26 days), drifting with them. {T}here was no significant difference in the residence times of dolphinfish in equatorial and tropical areas. {W}hile associated to {FAD}s, dolphinfish spent most of their time close to floating object (< 365 m). {T}he total time spent away from {FAD}s was low (median 8%), and likely corresponded to making feeding excursions. {D}olphinfish did not form a single school while associated to a given {FAD}s, but formed multiple small schools. {FAD}s are likely to be sites with exchanges of individuals between schools. {T}hese results are discussed in regards to the possibility of {FAD}s acting as ecological traps and the validity of meeting-point hypotheses as an explanation for fish aggregations under floating objects.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}quatic {L}iving {R}esources}, volume = {20}, numero = {4}, pages = {323--330}, ISSN = {0990-7440}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1051/alr:2008008}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010040974}, }
