@article{fdi:010040916, title = {{R}isk factors and consequences of congenital {C}hagas disease in {Y}acuiba, south {B}olivia}, author = {{S}alas, {N}. {A}. and {C}ot, {M}ichel and {S}chneider, {D}ominique and {M}endoza, {B}ertha and {S}antalla, {J}. {A}. and {P}ostigo, {J}orge and {C}hippaux, {J}ean-{P}hilippe and {B}rutus, {L}aurent}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{OBJECTIVES} {T}o determine the risk factors of congenital {C}hagas disease and the consequences of the disease in newborns. {METHODS} {S}tudy of 2712 pregnant women and 2742 newborns in {Y}acuiba, south {B}olivia. {C}hagas infection was determined serologically in mothers and parasitologically in newborns. {C}onsequences of congenital {C}hagas disease were assessed clinically. {RESULTS} {T}he prevalence of {C}hagas disease in pregnant women was 42.2%. {C}ongenital transmission was estimated at 6% of infected mothers leading to an incidence rate of 2.6% among newborns. {M}ain risk factors of congenital transmission were mothers' seropositivity and maternal {T}rypanosoma cruzi parasitaemia. {P}arity was higher in infected than in non-infected mothers, but it was not associated with the risk of congenital transmission. {T}he rate of congenital infection was significantly higher in newborns from multiple pregnancies than in singletons. {H}owever, we did not observe statistically significant consequences of {C}hagas disease in newborns from single pregnancies or among twins. {CONCLUSION} {T}he main risk factors for congenital transmission were infection and parasitaemia of mothers. {C}onsequences of the disease seemed mild in newborns from single pregnancies and perhaps more important in multiple births.}, keywords = {congenital {C}hagas disease ; vertical transmission ; pregnant women ; newborns ; {B}olivia}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{T}ropical {M}edicine and {I}nternational {H}ealth}, volume = {12}, numero = {12}, pages = {1498--1505}, ISSN = {1360-2276}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1111/j.1365-3156.2007.01958.x}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010040916}, }
