@article{fdi:010040850, title = {{G}enetic diversity of {A}cacia seyal del. rhizobial populations indigenous to senegalese soils in relation to salinity and p{H} of the sampling sites}, author = {{D}iouf, {D}iegane and {S}amba-{M}baye, {R}amatoulaye and {L}esueur, {D}. and {B}a, {A}. {T}. and {D}reyfus, {B}ernard and {L}ajudie de, {P}hilippe and {N}eyra, {M}arc}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{T}he occurrence and the distribution of rhizobial populations naturally associated to {A}cacia seyal {D}el. were characterized in 42 soils from {S}enegal. {T}he diversity of rhizobial genotypes, as characterized by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism ({RFLP}) analysis of 16{S}-23{S} r{DNA}, performed on {DNA} extracted from 138 nodules resulted in 15 clusters. {R}esults indicated the widespread occurrence of compatible rhizobia associated to {A}. seyal in various ecogeographic areas. {H}owever, the clustering of rhizobial populations based on intergenic spacer ({IGS}) {RFLP} profiles did not reflect their geographic origin. {F}our genera were discriminated on the basis of 16{S} r{RNA} gene sequences of the strains representative for the {IGS}-{RFLP} profiles. {T}he majority of rhizobia associated to {A}. seyal were affiliated to {M}esorhizobium and {S}inorhizobium 64 and 29%, respectively, of the different {IGS}-{RFLP} profiles. {O}ur results demonstrate the coexistence inside the nodule of plant-pathogenic non-{N}-2-fixing {A}grobacterium and {B}urkholderia strains, which induced the formation of ineffective nodules, with symbiotic rhizobia. {N}odulation was recorded in saline soils and/or at low p{H} values or in alkaline soils, suggesting adaptability of natural rhizobial populations to major ecological environmental stress and their ability to establish symbiotic associations within these soil environments. {T}hese results contribute to the progressing research efforts to uncover the biodiversity of rhizobia and to improve nitrogen fixation in agroforestry systems in sub-{S}aharan {A}frica.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{M}icrobial {E}cology}, volume = {54}, numero = {3}, pages = {553--566}, ISSN = {0095-3628}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1007/s00248-007-9243-0}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010040850}, }
