@article{fdi:010040797, title = {{C}lay mineral composition of river sediments in the {A}mazon {B}asin}, author = {{G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup and {J}ouanneau, {J}. {M}. and {S}oares, {L}. and {B}oaventura, {G}. {R}. and {M}aillet, {N}. and {L}agane, {C}hristelle}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}lay minerals are important in evaluating the maturity of suspended sediments, weathering intensity and source area. {H}owever, there are processes that can change the mineral assemblage such as river transportation, deposition, remobilization and tributary inputs. {I}n terms of water discharge and sediment yield, the {A}mazon is one of the largest rivers in the world. {M}ost of the suspended sediments come from the {A}ndes, crossing the lowlands before reaching the ocean. {T}his study measures the spatial distribution of clay mineral assemblages over the entire {A}mazon basin. {T}he results obtained show the main features of the {A}mazon {R}iver main stem and larger tributaries from their sources to their confluence. {C}lay mineral composition highlights the evolution of the {M}adeira and {M}aranon-{S}olimoes {R}iver, which start in the {A}ndes with high illite+chlorite content. {D}ownstream, smectite contents increase. {M}oreover, all shield tributaries show high kaolinite content. {T}he lower {A}mazon {R}iver is characterized by relative high smectite content, different from the {A}ndean sources. {T}he clay mineral results show that suspended sediments of the {A}mazon {R}iver have three main sources: 1) the {A}ndes mountains; 2) the {A}mazon shields and 3) the {P}iedmont basins, especially the {P}astaza alluvial megafan and the {F}itzcarrald {A}rch basin. {L}ateral bank erosion plays also a significant role, by the introduction of more mature sediments into the river, enriched in smectite.}, keywords = {clay mineral ; river sediments ; amazon basin}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}atena}, volume = {71}, numero = {2}, pages = {340--356}, ISSN = {0341-8162}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1016/j.catena.2007.02.002}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010040797}, }
