@article{fdi:010040775, title = {{D}ifferential expression of the {C}r{V}1 haemocyte inactivation-associated polydnavirus gene in the {A}frican maize stem borer {B}usseola fusca ({F}uller) parasitized by two biotypes of the endoparasitoid {C}otesia sesamiae ({C}ameron)}, author = {{G}itau, {C}. {W}. and {G}undersen {R}indal, {D}. and {P}edroni, {M}. and {M}bugi, {P}. {J}. and {D}upas, {S}t{\'e}phane}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{P}olydnaviruses are rarely studied for their natural variation in immune suppressive abilities. {T}he polydnavirus harboring braconid {C}otesia sesamiae, a widespread endoparasitoid of {B}usseola fusca and {S}esamia calamistis in sub-{S}aharan {A}frica exists as two biotypes. {I}n {K}enya, the western biotype completes development in {B}. fusca larvae. {H}owever, eggs of the coastal {C} sesamiae are encapsulated in this host and ultimately, no parasitoids emerge from parasitized {B}. fusca larvae. {B}oth biotypes develop successfully in {S}. calamistis larvae. {E}ncapsulation activity by {B}. fusca larvae towards eggs of the avirulent {C} sesamiae was detectable six hours post-parasitization. {T}he differences in encapsulation of virulent and avirulent strains were associated with differences in nucleotide sequences and expression of a {C}r{V}1 polydnavirus ({PDV}) gene, which is associated with haemocyte inactivation in the {C}otesia rubecula/{P}ieris rapae system. {C}r{V}1 expression was faint or absent in fat body and haemolymph samples from {B}. fusca parasitized by the avirulent {C}. sesamiae, which exhibited encapsulation of eggs. {E}xpression was high in fat body and haernolymph samples from both {B}. fusca and {S}. calamistis larvae parasitized by the virulent {C} sesamiae, encapsulation in the former peaking at the same time points as {C}r{V}1 expression in the latter. {N}on synonymous difference in {C}r{V}1 gene sequences between virulent and avirulent wasp suggests that variations in {B}. fusca parasitism by {C} sesamiae may be due to qualitative differences in {C}r{V}1-haemocyte interactions.}, keywords = {{C}r{V}1 genes ; {C}otesia sesamiae ; busseola fusca ; gene expression}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{J}ournal of {I}nsect {P}hysiology}, volume = {53}, numero = {7}, pages = {676--684}, ISSN = {0022-1910}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1016/j.jinsphys.2007.04.008}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010040775}, }
