@article{fdi:010037943, title = {{S}ediment-transport modeling on {S}outhern {C}alifornian shelves : a {ROMS} case study}, author = {{B}laas, {M}. and {D}ong, {C}. {M}. and {M}archesiello, {P}atrick and {M}c{W}illiams, {J}. {C}. and {S}tolzenbach, {K}. {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{S}uspended sediment- transport processes in {S}anta {M}onica and {S}an {P}edro {B}ay are analyzed using the sedimen t-tran sport capabilities of the {R}egional {O}ceanic {M}odeling {S}ystem ({ROMS}). {A} one-month simulation for {D}ecember 2001 has been carried out with a set of nested domains. {T}he model inputs include tides, winds, surface waves, and idealized initial sediment conditions for sand and non-cohesive silt. {A}part from the control run, the sensitivity of the results to surface waves, ripple roughness and bed armoring has been analyzed. {F}rom the control experiment, the horizontal transport of sand turns out to be limited to within a few km of the nearshore erosion zones. {D}uring high wave events, silt is transported over further distances and also partly offshelf in distinct plumes. {T}he effectiveness of horizontal silt transport depends strongly on vertical mixing due to both surface wind stress and wave-enhanced bottom stress. {H}igh wave events coincident with strong winds (hence strong vertical mixing) are the most optimal conditions for sed iment- transport. {E}xcluding wave effects in the simulation shows that surface waves are the dominant factor in resuspending bed material on the {S}outhern {C}alifornian shelves. {T}he sensitivity experiments also show that the direct influence of additional ripple roughness on erosion and deposition is relatively weak. {S}witching off bed armoring locally results in increases of near-bottom concentrations by a factor of 20 for silt and a factor of 5 for sand as well as stronger spatial gradients in grain size.}, keywords = {sediment transport ; wind waves ; shelf sea circulation ; wave boundary layer ; {S}anta {M}onica {B}ay ; {S}an {P}edro {B}ay}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ontinental {S}helf {R}esearch}, volume = {27}, numero = {6}, pages = {832--853}, ISSN = {0278-4343}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1016/j.csr.2006.12.003}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010037943}, }
