@article{fdi:010037912, title = {{P}leural mesothelioma in {N}ew {C}aledonia : {A}n acute environmental concern}, author = {{B}aumann, {F}. and {R}ougier, {Y}. and {A}mbrosi, {J}ean-{P}aul and {R}obineau, {B}ernard {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ackground: {I}n 1991, a relationship was established between excess cases of pleural cancer in {N}ew {C}aledonia and a traditional lime, called "{P}o", to cover houses. {O}ur study aimed to determine whether the {P}o is the only cause of mesothelioma in {N}ew {C}aledonia. {M}ethods: {E}ligible cases were pleural tumor diagnosed between 1984 and 2002 with histological diagnosis of mesothelioma. {F}or each case, two controls were selected from the cancer registry. {C}ases and controls were compared for the ethnic groups and the places of residence. {T}o identify environmental risk factors, we used first a qualitative analysis comparing villages with and without mesothelioma cases, then a linear regression including {P}o, mining activity and serpentinite in surface soil. {R}esults: {S}ixty-eight cases were included: 37 men and 31 women. {M}elanesians had the highest risk ({OR} = 16.18; 95% {CI} = [5.68; 49.64]) and 30% of the cases lived in {H}ouailou ({OR} = 119). {M}ining activity and {P}6 were not significant risk factors. {T}he existence of a significant relationship between soil containing serpentinite and mesotheliorna was demonstrated (p = 0.017). {T}he sex ratio close to {I} and the number of young cases are consistent with environmental exposure. {C}onclusion: {P}6 did not explain all cases; only serpentinite in the soil was identified as a significant risk factor. {A} research project has been initiated in the area around {H}ouailou, with the objective of constructing a model taking into account: exposure to the {P}6, exposure to airborne pollution by asbestos fibres at the place of residence, and occupational exposure. {E}pidemiological and geological investigations are underway.}, keywords = {cancer ; pleural tumor ; asbestos ; {P}o ; serpentinite ; tremolite ; melanesian ; geological exposure ; risk factom airborne pollution ; geographical distribution ; ultrabasic rock ; lime ; mine dust ; mining activity ; airborne exposure}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{C}ancer {D}etection and {P}revention}, volume = {31}, numero = {1}, pages = {70--76}, ISSN = {0361-090{X}}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1016/j.cdp.2006.10.009}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010037912}, }
