@article{fdi:010037819, title = {{A}ssociation between human {A}frican trypanosomiasis and the {IL}6 gene in a {C}ongolese population}, author = {{C}ourtin, {D}avid and {M}ilet, {J}acqueline and {J}amonneau, {V}incent and {Y}eminanga, {C}. {S}. and {K}umeso, {V}. {K}. {B}. and {B}ilengue, {C}. {M}. {M}. and {B}etard, {C}. and {G}arcia, {A}ndr{\'e}}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{D}espite the importance of behavioural and environmental risk factors, there are arguments consistent with the existence of a genetic susceptibility to human {A}frican trypanosomiasis ({HAT}). {A} candidate gene association study was conducted in the {D}emocratic {R}epublic of {C}ongo using a family-based sample which included a total of 353 subjects (86 trios; one case and parents (n = 258) and 23 families with more than one case and parents (n = 95)). {P}olymorphisms located on the {IL}1 alpha, {IL}4, {IL}6, {IL}8, {IL}10, {TNF} alpha and {IFN} gamma genes were genotyped after re-sequencing of the genes for extensive {SNP} search. {T}he {T} allele of the {IL}6(4339) {SNP} was significantly associated with a decreased risk of developing the disease (p = 0.0006) and a suggestive association was observed for the {IL}1 alpha(5417{T}) {SNP} and an increased risk of developing the disease. {T}hese results suggest that genetic variability of the {IL}6 and to a lesser extent the {IL}1 alpha gene are involved in the development of {HAT}. {F}or the {TNF} alpha and {IL}10 gene polymorphisms, association results obtained here were different from those we observed in another population living under different epidemiologic conditions. {T}his underlines the complexity of the interactions existing between host genetic polymorphisms, parasite diversity and behavioural and environmental risk factors in {HAT}.}, keywords = {association study ; {FBAT} ; interleukin ; {T}rypanosoma brucei gambiense ; human {A}frican trypanosomiasis ; human genetics ; human susceptibility}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{I}nfection {G}enetics and {E}volution}, volume = {7}, numero = {1}, pages = {60--68}, ISSN = {1567-1348}, year = {2007}, DOI = {10.1016/j.meegid.2006.04.001}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010037819}, }
