@article{fdi:010037621, title = {{R}apid {FTIR} sensing of volcanic gases released by {S}trombolian explosions at {Y}asur volcano, {V}anuatu}, author = {{O}ppenheimer, {C}. and {B}ani, {P}hilipson and {C}alkins, {J}. {A}. and {B}urton, {M}. {R}. and {S}awyer, {G}. {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{W}e report here the results of a field campaign in which a portable {F}ourier transform infrared ({FTIR}) spectrometer was used to measure gas emissions from {Y}asur volcano, {V}anuatu, in {J}anuary 2005. {B}y collecting {FTIR} spectra at a high rate (about 1 {H}z), we were able to observe a marked difference in the proportions of {SO}2 and {HC}l in emissions released during {S}trombolian eruptions ({SO}2/{HC}l molar ratio up to similar to 30 or more) compared with the intervening passive emissions discharged from the magmatic vent ({SO}2/{HC}l similar to 2). {T}his contrast can be explained by sourcing gas at different depths with respect to levels at which {SO}2 and {HC}l exsolve from the melt: deeper volatile exsolution supplies relatively {SO}2-rich gas responsible for the ephemeral explosions at the top of the conduit; while degassing of shallow magma, depleted in sulfur but rich in chlorine, contributes to the passive emission.}, keywords = {}, booktitle = {}, journal = {{A}pplied {P}hysics {B} {L}asers and {O}ptics}, volume = {85}, numero = {2-3}, pages = {453--460}, ISSN = {0946-2171}, year = {2006}, DOI = {10.1007/s00340-006-2353-4}, URL = {https://www.documentation.ird.fr/hor/fdi:010037621}, }
