@article{fdi:010036717, title = {{F}actors associated with adverse reactions induced by caprylic acid-fractionated whole {I}g{G} preparations : comparison between horse, sheep and camel {I}g{G}s}, author = {{H}errera, {M}. and {L}eon, {G}. and {S}egura, {A}. and {M}eneses, {F}. and {L}omonte, {B}. and {C}hippaux, {J}ean-{P}hilippe and {G}utierrez, {J}.{M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{C}aprylic acid purification of {I}g{G}, currently used in the manufacture of horse-derived antivenoms, was successfully adapted for the preparation of sheep and camel {I}g{G}. {S}heep {I}g{G} had a molecular mass of similar to 150 k{D}a, whereas camel {I}g{G} presented two bands of molecular masses of similar to 160 and 100 k{D}a, the latter corresponding to heavy-chain {I}g{G}, which is devoid of light chains. {H}orse, sheep and camel {I}g{G}s were compared by several parameters aiming at predicting their potential for induction of early and late adverse reactions. {H}orse and sheep {I}g{G}s showed a higher anticomplementary activity than camel {I}g{G}, and also elicited a higher anti-{I}g{G} response than camel {I}g{G}, when injected in mice. {H}orse {I}g{G} agglutinated human type {O}+ erythrocytes, whereas no such reactivity was observed in sheep and camel {I}g{G} preparations. {A} novel procedure was used for the detection of antibodies in human serum against animal {I}g{G}s. {I}t was found that a pool of human sera collected in {C}osta {R}ica had a higher titer of antibodies directed against horse and sheep {I}g{G}s than against camel {I}g{G}. {O}verall, camel {I}g{G} showed the lowest potential for the induction of adverse reactions among the three {I}g{G}s tested.
