@article{fdi:010036673, title = {{D}istribution and enrichment evaluation of heavy metals in {M}ejillones {B}ay (23 degrees {S}), {N}orthern {C}hile : geochemical and statistical approach}, author = {{V}aldes, {J}. and {V}argas, {G}. and {S}ifeddine, {A}bdelfettah and {O}rtlieb, {L}uc and {G}uinez, {M}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{A} suite of 36 surface sediment samples, taken between 10 and 100 in water depth in {M}ejillones {B}ay ({N}orthern {C}hile), were analyzed for mineralogy, grain size, total organic carbon, {A}l, and heavy metal content ({C}d, {Z}n, {N}i, {M}n, {V}, {M}o). {Q}uartz and feldspars were the main lithogenic minerals and carbonate the predominant biogenic mineral. {S}ediments were fine sands in the shallow zone and organic silt in the deeper zone. {E}nrichment {F}actor and {F}actor {A}nalysis approach showed that the presence of {M}n in the marine sediment of {M}ejillones is due to a partial influence of continental input, while all other metals are not supported by lithogenic debris. {A}lthough all metals showed high concentrations in the marine sediment of {M}ejillones {B}ay, comparison between metal concentration in surface sediments and preindustrial levels in this bay, show that present values agree with natural levels.
