@inproceedings{fdi:010025634, title = {{H}ydrological control on the temporal variability of mercury in surface waters of the upper {M}adeira basin rivers, {B}olivia}, author = {{M}aurice {B}ourgoin, {L}aurence and {F}raizy, {P}ascal and {A}lanoca, {L}. and {S}eyler, {P}atrick and {G}uyot, {J}ean-{L}oup}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{M}ercury contamination of waters and soils is an environmental problem of increasing concern throughout the {A}mazon {R}iver baxin. {I}n order to better understand the sources of {H}g in a major tributary to the {A}mazon, a monthly time series spanning an entire hydrological cycle has been measured for two rivers of the {U}pper {M}adeira drainage basin. {A}t both gauging stations, we observe a hydrological control on the temporal variability of the dissolved and the total mercury ({TH}g) concentrations: they increase in phase with increasing discharge and we observe the highest {TH}g concentrations at the peak stage. {M}ercury associated with particles represents more than 90% of the {TH} g in high-water period, and tends to decrease only slowly with falling river stage. {T}his suggests that weathering processes are still active during this last stage. {O}ne of the principal factors controlling the distribution of {H}g in {A}ndean waters is apparently the process of soil erosion.
