  abstract = {{T}he research of the {NRI} ({N}ational {R}esearch {I}nstitute)-{FRP} team followed the outline set out in a questionnaire for the {IIED} ({I}nternational {I}nstitute for {E}nvironment and {D}evelopment) {C}ountry {S}tudy on {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea, "{P}olicy that {W}orks for {F}orest and {P}eople". {I}t contains a detailed set of research questions on issues of land use and forest management in rural communities (see appendix 1). {T}his questionnaire was prepared by {C}olin {F}iler ({NRI}), {N}ikhil {S}ekhran ({PNG} {C}onservation and {R}esources {C}entre), {B}rian {B}runton ({G}reenpeace), and {B}asil {P}eutalo ({WWF}-{PNG}). {I}t was answered by expatriate social scientists working predominantly in rural areas throughout {P}apua {N}ew {G}uinea and by national university students. {B}y incorporating these questions into our methodology, the results of {NRI}-{FRP} research can be compared to these existing data ({S}illitoe, {F}iler n.d.). {F}or the purpose of this report, the questionnaire has been slightly modified and was also answered by most other {APFT}/{FRP} researchers working in {M}elanesia. {T}his introductory summary to our research follows, therefore, the structure of the {IIED} questionnaire, some detailed data are placed in tables (appendix 2) but commented upon in the text.
