@article{fdi:010024215, title = {{I}sozyme diversity in {B}ambara groundnut}, author = {{P}asquet, {R}{\'e}my and {S}chwedes, {S}. and {G}epts, {P}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{B}ambara groundnut (#{V}igna subterranea$ ({L}.) {V}erdc.) is an important crop in many countries of tropical {A}frica. {C}ompared with other leguminous crops, little is known about the organization of its genetic diversity. {O}ur goal was to investigate its population structure and the partitioning of genetic diversity between domesticated and wild accessions. {S}eventy-nine accessions of domesticated and 21 wild {B}ambara groundnut populations were evaluated for genetic diversity at 41 isozyme loci, representing 23 enzyme systems. {D}omesticated accessions were characterized by very low genetic diversity ({H}t = 0.052) with only 7 polymorphic loci. {W}ild populations were characterized by higher genetic diversity ({H}t = 0.087), with 14 polymorphic. {T}his suggests a marked bottleneck between wild and domesticated forms. {I}ntrapopulation diversity was comparatively high ({H}s = 0.033 for domesticated and {H}s = 0.025 for wild populations) despite the near absence of heterozygous individuals, which suggests a predominantly selfing mode of pollination in both wild and domesticated {B}ambara groundnut. {H}igh genetic identity between wild and domesticated forms suggests that wild {B}ambara groundnut is the true progenitor of domesticated {B}ambara groundnut. {B}oth morphological and isozyme data show a gradient between true wild and domesticated {B}ambara groundnut through weedy populations. {T}he improved understanding of the organization of genetic diversity of {B}ambara groundnut provided by our data will allow a better conservation of its genetic resources.
