@article{fdi:010024084, title = {{I}soenzymes of human lice : {P}ediculus humanus and {P}. capitis}, author = {{A}mevigbe, {M}.{D}.{D}. and {F}errer, {A}. and {C}hamporie, {S}. and {M}onteny, {N}icole and {D}eunff, {J}. and {R}ichard-{L}enoble, {D}.}, editor = {}, language = {{ENG}}, abstract = {{H}uman lice ({P}hthiraptera : {P}ediculidae) from {A}frica, {A}merica and {E}urope were electrophoresed for 28 enzymes, with special interest in metabolic factors likely to be involved with insecticide resistance. {Z}ymogram profiles of the body louse (#{P}ediculus humanus$ {L}. from {F}rance and {U}.{S}.{A}.) and the head louse (#{P}. capitis$ {D}e{G}eer from {F}rance, {M}adagascar, {M}ali & {S}enegal) were compared. {O}nly two enzymes, phosphoglucomutase ({P}gm) and esterase 3 ({E}st-3), showed electrophoretic variation. {I}n our starch gel electrophoresis conditions, #{P}. humanus$ showed three electromorphs of {P}gm migrating anodally 6, 11 and 16 mm (designated alleles a, b, c, respectively). {O}f the putative {P}gm alleles, b and c occured in all samples of both species of lice, whereas allele a was found only in #{P}. humanus$ lab strain from {U}.{S}.{A}. {E}sterase 3 had four electromorphs migrating 23, 26, 30 and 35 mm (designated allele a, b, c and d). {A}mong putative {E}st alleles, a was found only in #{P}. capitis$ from {B}amako (all 14 specimens aa homozygotes), allele d was found only in #{P}. capitis$ from {D}akar (39% frequency), whereas {E}st-3 alleles b and c showed apparently balanced polymorphism in all samples of both #{P}. humanus$ and #{P}. capitis$ except from {B}amako. {D}espite the limited amount of isoenzyme variation detected (only 2/31 polymorphic loci), divergences of {E}st-3 and {P}gm among #{P}ediculus$ populations may be relevant to their biosystematics and resistance.
